I recently heard that a Chemical Peel is like a Zamboni for your face! Haha – I love this analogy! It’s so true! “Like a Zamboni, it gets rid of all the rough stuff on the surface, and leaves behind a smooth, fresh layer beneath.”
A Chemical Peel is a chemical exfoliation cosmetic procedure.
A chemical peel dissolves top layers of skin, the “stratum corneum”. Some go a little deeper into the epidermis depending on the type of peel and the concentration of the peeling agent. This rekindles collagen production, increases cellular turnover, and builds up a better-looking complexion – evening skin tone, and refining the epidermis (the top layer of skin).
There are 3 levels of Chemical Peels: Light, Medium and Deep – the levels correspond to the formula and strength of the chemical. Lighter Peels are good for treating acne, minimizing the appearance of pores, and revealing more radiant skin. Medium Peels are able to treat sun damage and fine lines. Georgia Genie works with a professional line of peels ranging from light to medium. Deeper peels should be performed by a Dermatologist or in office.
The short answer is, yes. Chemical Peels can target acne in different ways. Some include Salicylic Acid which is "fat loving". Salicylic Acid is the stand out peel for acne because it breaks down the fat/lipid stuck in the pore and has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid, a common peeling agent. Types of AHAs include Glycolic, Lactic, Citric, Mandelic, Tartaric, Malic => these are really good to use if skin is feeling dull, congested, and in need of overall rejuvenation. They "unglue" the build up of things like dead skin cells, and trapped pigment, which allows the skin texture to become smoother, the skin appearance to become brighter, and ultimately through the exfoliation action, it allows fine lines and wrinkles to minimize.
Some clients describe the peel to feel like a mild sting or tingle during the treatment. The lighter the peel – the less downtime to recover.
During recovery time, (these peels are pretty superficial with little to no downtime), you may experience light flaking, peeling, and redness. But afterwards, many clients report more radiant complexions with diminished appearance of acne, rough skin, freckles and sun damage. The peel can also improve the appearance of fine lines and pores. A peel can safely break down the buildup of the skin’s imperfections that naturally occur with time, and subsequently will have an “Oh Wow!” effect. A reaction I’m seeing and hearing often.
You can expect results within 1 week with a Chemical Peel. Depending on your concerns, a treatment plan will be suggested, but typically you can do a AHA/BHA Chemical Peel once a month for up to 6 treatments. Even though you will see (and feel) results after 1 Chemical Peel, a series can actually improve the integrity of your skin health, and more long lasting. once a month every 5-6 months.
Laura P has been getting treated by Laser Genie for many years now, since 2017! She enjoys her IPL facials, and Microneedling. She's done the Chemical Peel protocol twice, and has this to say about it: "No make up and so happy with my results with minimal peeling and irritation! My skin has been flawless and no more blackheads since your treatment. The creams and serums are awesome!"
Kat achieved amazing reduction of pigment from her Chemical Peel protocol. Her journey was as follows: Pre-peel at-home skin prep for 4 weeks. Then an in-clinic peel followed by an in-clinic microneedling protocol (to get deep at the root of the melanocytes), while maintaining the results with the at-home skin care.
